Tipping Etiquette For Your Next Hotel Stay

by Joshua Armstrong

So, you have an upcoming hotel stay scheduled and you want to make sure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. You've already paid for your room, so you're all taken care of, right? Well, not necessarily. During your stay, you should expect to leave a few tips here and there for the hotel staff. This will help to ensure that you receive the best possible service and that the hard-working staff knows they're appreciated.

If You Don't Have Cash on You

One predicament many hotel guests find themselves in upon arrival is not having any cash on them; after all, many people these days choose to carry only credit or debit cards. If this occurs and you receive assistance from a doorman, bellhop, or any other position where a tip would be recommended, there is a good way to handle it. Rather than making it awkward by scrounging up loose change from your pocket or asking the staff member to accompany you to the nearest ATM, consider getting the employee's name and letting him or her know that you will leave an envelope with tip money at the front desk later on. And then, of course, follow through with that promise.

Tipping the Cleaning Staff

Most hotels pay their cleaning staff what's considered a livable wage, but this doesn't mean you shouldn't tip them. After all, cleaning hotel rooms is a very tiring and often thankless job, so a few dollars here and there can really go a long way. If you choose to tip the housekeeping staff at your hotel, it's best to leave a small tip each day rather than a large tip at the end of your stay. This way, if different people clean your room each day, you can ensure that each one of them receives a fair tip.

Which Staff Should You Tip?

To put it as simply as possible, there are really no hotel staff members who will turn down a tip. Most hotel guests know they should tip a valet employee, housekeeping member, or bellhop. However, some lesser tipped positions you might want to consider throwing a couple of dollars toward include the concierge and front desk staff. After all, these employees typically have the power to transform your stay from an enjoyable one to an amazing one with room upgrades, late check-outs, and the like. Simply put, be a generous tipper and you may just be surprised at how well you are treated.
